Lynnwood, WA – The Foundation for Edmonds School District announced today that alumna Blair (Benshoof) Sprunk (MTHS ’84) and her husband Eric, Chief Operating Officer at Nike, have donated $26,000 to the “Hawks Helping Hawks” athletic scholarship fund at Mountlake Terrace High School. The gift of Nike stock will increase the fund first established by the couple in 2014.

“Eric and I wanted to add to the balance in our scholarship fund because we recognize the value of higher education and we know how expensive it can be,” said Blair Sprunk. “We also remember our roots and want to invest in the people and places that shaped our own lives.”

Five years ago, the Sprunks donated $50,000 to a scholarship fund that has distributed $1,000 annual awards to Mountlake Terrace High School seniors pursuing vocational, 2-year or 4-year degrees. The “Hawks Helping Hawks” Scholarship is in honor of Blair Sprunk’s mothers, Carol Benshoof and Franque Remington.

“Blair and Eric have opened doors to college for so many students who might not go otherwise,” said Executive Director Deborah Anderson. “That they choose to once again support Blair’s alma mater in this way makes their gift all the more special, and we thank them.”

Blair Sprunk was a was a class salutatorian and member of the Mountlake Terrace High School Cheer Squad in the early 1980s. Eric Sprunk joined Nike in 1993 and has been the corporation’s Chief Operating Officer since July 1, 2013.

LYNNWOOD, WA – The Foundation for Edmonds School District announced today that it has received a $5,000 grant from Wells Fargo Foundation to expand the College Access for All Program. College Access for All reduces barriers to higher education through stipends and scholarships for low-income high school students.

Financial assistance is available for college entrance and world language exams, College in the High School course fees, summer school credit recovery, and post-secondary scholarships for vocational, 2-year and 4-year programs. Last year, College Access for All served more than 3,000 high school students enrolled in the Edmonds School District.

“When we talk about equity in education, access to higher learning is part of that conversation. Without it students are denied opportunities for skilled employment and career choices later on,” said Deborah Anderson, Executive Director of the Foundation for Edmonds School District. “College Access for All helps to ensure that doors remain open for more of our students. We sincerely appreciate Wells Fargo Foundation’s investment in their futures.”

The Edmonds School District is Snohomish County’s largest public school district, serving more than 20,500 students across 35 schools. Nearly 33 percent of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch and an estimated 600 will experience homelessness during the school year. Last year, the Foundation made more than $600,000 in district-wide program investments.

Lynnwood, WA – The Foundation for
Edmonds School District announced, after a preliminary tally, that it raised
over $146,000 at the annual Recipe for
Success fundraiser held at Embassy Suites on March 15th.
Presented by HomeStreet Bank and Premera Blue Cross, the event drew record
attendance of over 620 local civic and business leaders, school board trustees,
district staff and community supporters. Event sponsors included: Alaska
Airlines, BN Builders, The Boeing Company and Inspirus Credit Union.

Funds raised will expand
Foundation programs focused on career and college readiness, academic
enrichment, and health and wellness across the Edmonds School District. Last
year, total program investments exceeded $600,000 district-wide, benefiting
students, families and teachers in 34 schools.

Executive Director Deborah
Anderson presented an overview of key programs and examples of innovative
programs recently funded by the Foundation. These included a grant to
commission an original work written collaboratively by a guest composer for Meadowdale
High School music students; Pop-up Pantries at five school locations to serve
families in need; and an elementary afterschool program that gives parents
tools to support their children academically. Anderson emphasized the
importance of community connections, telling attendees that “our programs are
made possible by building bridges and community partnerships that support our students,
families and educators. We thank you for your support.”

Guests also heard from Sophie Burbank, a senior at Mountlake Terrace High School and 2019 Presidential Scholars Program nominee. She has received numerous STEM and TSA awards, and holds leadership posts in the Technical Students Association both at school and the state level. In her remarks, Burbank credits Career & Technical Education and STEM programs with providing an “exploratory environment” that has helped her discover academic and leadership roles that she’s “passionate about and excels at.”

Superintendent
Kris McDuffy recognized community leaders and nearly 30 corporate sponsors in
attendance. She also thanked district teachers and staff for their hard work
and commitment to educational excellence. Dr. McDuffy described the Foundation
as a “vital partner, working in tandem with us to build relationships that move
us closer to our shared goal of better student outcomes.”

Recipe for Success is the Foundation’s
largest annual fundraiser which this year included breakfast and lunch
programs. Guests heard performances by award-winning Four of Hearts jazz combo
and a string quartet from Edmonds-Woodway High School, known for exceptional
music education. A demonstration by Mountlake Terrace High School’s
world-ranked Robotics Team 1778 showcased excellence in STEM learning. Mark
Madison, director of Career & Technical Education, was on hand to talk with
business representatives about the district’s Career Connected Learning
initiatives.

in partnership with the District to ensure that every student has the resources
to learn, thrive and contribute to our vibrant community. With an all-volunteer
board and active community participants, the Foundation provides supplemental
funding and programs that support students, families and teachers in the
pursuit of educational excellence. www.foundationesd.org

The Foundation for Edmonds School
District is pleased to announce that it has received a $10,000 gift from
Seattle-based Inspirus Credit Union. Funds will further the Foundation’s work
in all program areas including Creative Classroom and School-Wide Grants; World
Language, P-SAT, College in the High School test fees; Summer School Credit
Recovery class fees; Bridging the Digital Divide; and the Nourishing Network.

“Inspirus has a long history of
investing in public education and strong communities throughout Washington
State. We are honored to be among the organizations it supports,” said Deborah
Anderson, Executive Director of the Foundation for Edmonds School District.
“Partnerships are at the heart of the Foundation’s 35-year history, so I’m
pleased to count Inspirus among our partners as we continue to implement
programs designed to ensure that every student in our district has the
resources to learn, thrive and contribute to our vibrant community.”

The Edmonds School District is
Snohomish County’s largest public school district, serving more than 20,200
students across 35 schools. Nearly 33% of students are eligible for free or
reduced lunch and an estimated 600 will experience homelessness during the
school year. Last year, the Foundation made more than $600,000 in district-wide
program investments.

Inspirus Credit Union, which recently
announced its intent to merge with Gesa Credit Union, has more than 80,000
members and $1 billion in assets. Established in 1936, Inspirus’ vision is to
be a financial services organization most valued for its contributions to
education.

“It is
evident that the Foundation for Edmonds School District creatively and
effectively bridges barriers to school success,” said Pamela Shelp, Community
Engagement & Partnership Coordinator, Inspirus Credit Union. “Our two
organizations share a common belief that quality public schools and secure
families make for thriving communities. This gift is an investment in those
priorities.”

For 35 years, the Foundation for
Edmonds School District has supported students, teachers and schools by putting
money raised where it enhances student learning the most — directly into schools
and classrooms. With an all-volunteer board and active community participants,
the Foundation successfully provides Edmonds School District with a dynamic
partnership in educating our children. www.foundationesd.org

The Foundation for Edmonds School District is pleased to announce that it has received a $500,000 gift from the Elizabeth Ruth Wallace Living Trust. The gift was made in memory of Elizabeth’s parents, Emil and Katie Stadler, and her former neighbor, Emil Lichtenstein, to establish a board endowed fund.

Elizabeth (Bette), a 1942 graduate of Edmonds High School, passed away at her home in Mountain View, California on December 4, 2016. She was 92 years old. Elizabeth moved from Montana to Alderwood Manor in 1928 with her parents, Emil and Katie Stadler and five siblings. Two more children were born in Alderwood Manor. All eight Stadler children attended Alderwood Grade School and graduated from Edmonds High; Emil ’36, Agnes ’37, Fred ’39, Margaret ’40, Elizabeth ’42, Clara ’45, Dorothy ’47, and Karl ’51. Fifteen Stadler family nieces and nephews also attended Edmonds School District schools, graduating from Mountlake Terrace, Meadowdale, and Lynnwood High Schools.

Emil Lichtenstein lived next door to the Stadler family on North Trunk Road (36th Ave W. Lynnwood) were he operated a chicken farm. Mr. Lichtenstein served as a member the Edmonds School District Board between 1932 and 1941. He was part of the group that was instrumental in bringing better bus service to the students of the district.

After graduation, Elizabeth worked as a civilian for the United States Army in Seattle, and also in Haines, Alaska, and Tokyo, Japan. In 1949, she returned to the United States moving to San Francisco to live with her sister Agnes. She was married to Bryan Wallace in 1950 and they made their home in Mountain View. Bryan was a 1939 graduate of the University of Washington School of Pharmacy. They opened and operated Bryan’s Drugs until 1974 followed by Elizabeth operating travel agencies. She traveled the world for many years well into her 80s.

Elizbeth’s niece, Cheri Ryan, serves as her trustee. “My aunt was always proud of being an Edmonds High School graduate. Said Ryan. The school district educated many members of the Stadler family and this is a way we can recognize and honor her memory and the education we received.”

“We are so thankful for the gift from the Elizabeth Wallace Living Trust and what it means for the long-term sustainability of our Foundation.” Said Troy Rector, Board President, “This gift will have a significant, lasting impact in supporting the students and teachers of the Edmonds School District”.

The Foundation for Edmonds School District has announced a new donor recognition programs designed to recognize and thank the generous support of our communities in helping to shape students’ futures.

“When we give to the Foundation for Edmonds School District, we are confident that our investment will have a far-reaching impact in students’ lives now and in their future after graduation,” said Todd and Christi Flynn, donors from Edmonds. “We are enthusiastic about the many ways the Foundation supports district students — scholarship funds for PSAT tests in high school, paying for college in the high school credits and classroom grants that enrich teachers’ ambitious lesson plans. Rising graduation rates in our district is one of several key indicators that show us we have invested wisely.

Our youngest will graduate from Meadowdale High School in June, but that doesn’t mean our interest and commitment ends. We believe that public education can and should be the great equalizer and we will continue our support,” they added.

Our donors enable the Foundation for Edmonds School District to make a positive impact for our students and educators. We wish to take this opportunity to thank all our donors for their incredibly generous support, and for shaping students’ futures. We would like to offer an extra special thanks to our donors who contributed $10,000 or more to the Foundation in 2016.
