Lynnwood, WA – The Foundation for Edmonds School District announced today that alumna Blair (Benshoof) Sprunk (MTHS ’84) and her husband Eric, Chief Operating Officer at Nike, have donated $26,000 to the “Hawks Helping Hawks” athletic scholarship fund at Mountlake Terrace High School. The gift of Nike stock will increase the fund first established by the couple in 2014.

“Eric and I wanted to add to the balance in our scholarship fund because we recognize the value of higher education and we know how expensive it can be,” said Blair Sprunk. “We also remember our roots and want to invest in the people and places that shaped our own lives.”

Five years ago, the Sprunks donated $50,000 to a scholarship fund that has distributed $1,000 annual awards to Mountlake Terrace High School seniors pursuing vocational, 2-year or 4-year degrees. The “Hawks Helping Hawks” Scholarship is in honor of Blair Sprunk’s mothers, Carol Benshoof and Franque Remington.

“Blair and Eric have opened doors to college for so many students who might not go otherwise,” said Executive Director Deborah Anderson. “That they choose to once again support Blair’s alma mater in this way makes their gift all the more special, and we thank them.”

Blair Sprunk was a was a class salutatorian and member of the Mountlake Terrace High School Cheer Squad in the early 1980s. Eric Sprunk joined Nike in 1993 and has been the corporation’s Chief Operating Officer since July 1, 2013.

Lynnwood, WA – The Foundation for Edmonds School District announced today that it received $74,000 in grant funding from the Hazel Miller Foundation, a private non-profit organization dedicated to the citizens of Edmonds and South Snohomish County. The funds will be allocated to three Foundation programs: Students Scholarships, Hazel Miller Back to School Basics, and the Nourishing Network.

“We could not provide programs and services that fundamentally benefit thousands of students in our district without strong community partnerships,” said Foundation Executive Director Deborah Anderson. “We thank the Hazel Miller Foundation for once again investing in student success and supporting our teachers’ essential work in the classroom.”

The Student Scholarship program will receive $37,000 to increase the number and amount of financial awards given to graduating senior high school students going on to vocational, 2- or 4-year college programs, and to continue scholarship aid for qualifying students. Last year, the Foundation awarded $159,000 in scholarships to 69 students across the district’s six high schools.

The Hazel Miller Back to School Basics program will receive $32,000 so that teachers can buy classroom supplies and supplemental materials that enrich student learning. More than 250 teachers will receive funds at the beginning of the 2019-2020 schoolyear.

The Foundation’s Nourishing Network program, created at the request of and in partnership with the Edmonds School District, will receive $5,000 to support key services. These include weekend meal kits for more than 240 students each week, the summer meal program serving 2,200 free lunches, pop-up pantries at five schools to provide food and basic necessities to struggling households, and holiday meals for 150 families in need.

The Hazel Miller Foundation supports programs and projects that serve the public’s benefit, especially in the areas of education and youth services, poverty alleviation and hunger, civic and community services and amenities, the environment, diversity, culture, and the arts. www.hazelmillerfoundation.org

The Foundation for Edmonds School District is pleased to announce that it has received a $10,000 grant from The Norcliffe Foundation, a family foundation that funds human services, healthcare, civic and community projects, education, and arts and culture initiatives in the Puget Sound region.

The grant will expand the Foundation’s College Access for All Program, which reduces barriers to higher education through stipends and scholarships for low-income students. Financial assistance is available for college entrance and world language exams, College in the High School course fees, summer school credit recovery, and post-secondary scholarships for vocational, 2-year and 4-year programs. Last year, College Access for All served more than 3,000 high school students enrolled in the Edmonds School District.

“It’s a known fact that access to education after high school has become a prerequisite for skilled employment and careers of the future,” said Deborah Anderson, Executive Director of the Foundation for Edmonds School District. “Underwriting the cost of exams, college-credit courses, summer school and post-secondary tuition is a common-sense approach that opens doors for more of our students. We thank The Norcliffe Foundation for supporting them with this generous grant.”

The Edmonds School District is Snohomish County’s largest public school district, serving more than 20,200 students across 35 schools. Nearly 33% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch and an estimated 600 will experience homelessness during the school year. Last year, the Foundation made more than $600,000 in district-wide program investments.

For 35 years, the Foundation for Edmonds School District has supported students, teachers and schools by putting money raised where it enhances student learning the most — directly into schools and classrooms. With an all-volunteer board and active community participants, the Foundation successfully provides Edmonds School District with a dynamic partnership in educating our children. www.foundationesd.org

The Foundation for Edmonds School
District is pleased to announce that it has received a $10,000 gift from
Seattle-based Inspirus Credit Union. Funds will further the Foundation’s work
in all program areas including Creative Classroom and School-Wide Grants; World
Language, P-SAT, College in the High School test fees; Summer School Credit
Recovery class fees; Bridging the Digital Divide; and the Nourishing Network.

“Inspirus has a long history of
investing in public education and strong communities throughout Washington
State. We are honored to be among the organizations it supports,” said Deborah
Anderson, Executive Director of the Foundation for Edmonds School District.
“Partnerships are at the heart of the Foundation’s 35-year history, so I’m
pleased to count Inspirus among our partners as we continue to implement
programs designed to ensure that every student in our district has the
resources to learn, thrive and contribute to our vibrant community.”

Snohomish County’s largest public school district, serving more than 20,200

school year. Last year, the Foundation made more than $600,000 in district-wide
program investments.

Inspirus Credit Union, which recently
announced its intent to merge with Gesa Credit Union, has more than 80,000
members and $1 billion in assets. Established in 1936, Inspirus’ vision is to
be a financial services organization most valued for its contributions to
education.

“It is
evident that the Foundation for Edmonds School District creatively and
effectively bridges barriers to school success,” said Pamela Shelp, Community
Engagement & Partnership Coordinator, Inspirus Credit Union. “Our two
organizations share a common belief that quality public schools and secure
families make for thriving communities. This gift is an investment in those
priorities.”

The Foundation for Edmonds School District is pleased to announce it has awarded $82,500 in scholarships to 47 graduating seniors and five alumni in the Edmonds School District.

This year several new scholarships were formed. Among them are the Cheeseburger Babies Foundation Community Service Scholarship, the ELL First Generation Scholarship, the Edmonds In Bloom Scholarship and the Dr. Nick Brossoit Scholarship.

The Foundation Board of Directors established a scholarship in honor of retiring Edmonds School District Superintendent, Dr. Nick Brossoit. Dr. Brossoit came from a single-parent household and participated in free/reduced lunch programs. Although he had an absent parent, caring teachers and coaches took the young Dr. Brossoit under their wing. Through their dedication and genuine care, Dr. Brossoit chose to spend his life in education. After serving 32 years, he retired from public education in the Edmonds School District in June 2016.

The first awardee of the Dr. Nick Brossoit scholarship, Nancy Ou, was a 2016 graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School. Nancy graduated with a full international baccalaureate degree with a cumulative 3.88 GPA. She too was left without parental support and had to learn to care for herself. Through her perseverance, she learned that as long as she kept moving forward and learning, she could survive anything. Nancy plans to study biology and chemistry at the University of Washington this fall.

The Foundation has received generous funding from The Hazel Miller Foundation and district alumni. Included in this year’s awards are two $5,000 and eleven $2,000 Hazel & Morris Miller Scholarships, five $1,000 second year Hazel Miller Scholarships, one Lenovo Thinkpad and various alumni scholarships. Awards were presented at each of the district’s high school awards night ceremonies. Scholarship recipients are listed below.
